Need Gas, Really?

I was in the drive-through line at Starbucks when she walked up to my car window. So I opened the car window and asked, “Can I help you?”starbucks

“Can you spare a few dollars? My car is just about out of gas and I don’t have any money. I need to get to Odessa for a job interview.”

The middle-aged lady standing next to the coffee menu looked like someone I would pass in the grocery store. My first thought was that she didn’t really look needy. But then I felt guilty for hesitating to help someone when I was about to spend four dollars on a cup of espresso and milk. “I’d be happy to fill your car with gas when I get out of this line,” was what I settled on. 20 Spiritual Things to Pray for Other Christians

Prayer is Hard

Something unusual and exciting has been happening the last few months. People have been asking me to pray for them. This in itself is not unusual. This happens with family, friends, and church members all the time. What is different recently is who is asking me to pray. Friends I’ve lost contact with, brand new acquaintances, and even people I’ve never met in person have been asking me to go before the Father on their behalf.

I’m starting to get the feeling that God wants to do something new in me. Prayer has always been a struggle for me. Don’t get me wrong – I faithfully pray. But, it has never been easy. It often feels forced or like I’m merely going through the motions. Of course there are days when it feels like God is sitting beside me, holding my hand, and whispering in my ear. Those are the days that keep me returning to Him in prayer. Oh yeah, and also the fact that He commands us to pray. Read more

Remembering the Past to Strengthen the Future

I’m sitting at a hotel room desk in Denton, Texas while my husband snores in the bed behind me. Five hours from home, we’re here for our oldest daughter’s college graduation. Kelley will graduate magna cum laude today from the University of North Texas. (If it sounds like I’m bragging, I am.) We plan to have a nice little celebration with family, friends, and Jeremy, Kelley’s fiancé. Oh yeah, Kelley is also getting married in August.

Kelley, our 2009 UNT Graduate

The last twelve months have been filled with milestones for me and my family. They serve as constant reminders that time passes quickly, things change, children grow-up. In the last year, our second daughter graduated from high school, our youngest got his driver’s license, and Wayne and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. And still ahead this summer is Kelley’s wedding and my 30th high school reunion. Read more
