Easters Past

I came across some old Easter photos yesterday – really old! They’re pics of me, my brother, and my parents from the 1960’s. I have on frilly dresses, lacy socks, and patent leather shoes. In one I even sport an Easter bonnet. In a couple we’re standing in front of my dad’s Ford Fairlane. My parents were younger in those photos than I am now – quite a bit younger in fact.

Seeing these photos sparked a lot of memories – which in itself is amazing because my memory is terrible! But I remember the Easter baskets well. In Shreveport, Louisiana, where I grew up, there was a charity for the blind. Sightless adults made elaborate baskets decorated with tulle, ribbon, and lace. Mom took me there several times to get baskets over the years. Read more

Looking for God?

Ever wonder where God is and what He’s up to when you’re suffering through hard times? I think we’ve all asked that question at some point. I certainly can’t explain God’s ways but the Bible does give us some insight.

First, God knows our every need. The Lord of all creation – the One who knows when a sparrow falls to the ground – knows when you’re hungry and when you’re grieving. He promises to meet your needs as you seek Him first (Matthew 6:33).

Second, God promises that no matter what we go through He is with us in the middle of it. Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” I love that phrase “an ever-present help.” We are not alone. He is with us to give us strength and guidance even in the hardest of days. Read more

Biblical bling in Rhea’s new book

Rhonda Rhea shares her heart – and a little fashion advice – in her latest book, Whatsoever Things Are Lovely.

Rhonda (after reading this book, I feel like I know her so I’ll use her first name) pokes fun at herself and some of her accessory catastrophes that make for girls-night-out enjoyable reading.

At first, I wondered if the book would be frivolous, but Rhonda made it clear this was not a book for fashionistas by listing the top 10 reasons why it’s best to have cheap jewelry. No. 8: “When your favorite pieces start looking a little worn, a light coat of spray paint can shine them right back up.”

God’s Word isn’t used as just a pretty accent, it’s the central focus of the book. Rhonda shares practical suggestions for keeping your mind on whatever is true, pure and right with straightforward instruction to address sin. The balance of humor and scripture puts her writing in the vein of Beth Moore. Read more

"Shoot the Wounded"

There’s a lot of buzz on both sides of the border about my Canadian friend Lynn Dove’s new book “Shoot the Wounded.” Read the quick overview and then keep going to hear more from Lynn herself.

SHOOT THE WOUNDED is a contemporary Christian novel that deals with relevant social shoot the woundedissues such as teen pregnancy and family violence. Set in the small fictional town of Maplewood, in southern Alberta, best friends Leigh and Ronnie find their friendship and faith challenged when Jake, a good looking Christian boy, moves into their neighborhood. Leigh is especially delighted that Jake is paying more attention to her than any other girl at school or church, but what she does not know is that despite his bold declaration of being a follower of Christ, he’s carrying a dark secret from his past that has the potential to destroy his integrity and have his friends question the legitimacy of his faith. Waiting years

Do you ever get impatient with God? Have you ever thought He was taking too long to do something you believed He promised to do in your life?

I’ve been reading about Joseph during my daily Bible reading. This morning  I read Genesis 41:46, “Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt.”  I thought, “Not too shabby. Joseph was still a young whipper-snapper when he obtained the second highest position in all of Egypt.”

Then I remembered that when Joseph was a teenager God had revealed to him through dreams that his family would bow down to him. Then his brothers sold him into slavery at seventeen. Joseph spent thirteen years as a slave and a prisoner. Yet, Scripture doesn’t tell us that Joseph sulked or got mad at God or stomped around asking God when He planned on doing something about his circumstances. Read more
