Instant Faith in the Digital Age

I met Daniel Darling about a year ago at the International Christian Retailers Show in St. Louis. Daniel, a dynamic young pastor, is a husband and father of three. I even got to meet Daniel’s wife when they gave me a ride in their mini-van to a dinner hosted by our publisher. But I had not read any of his books until this week.

I must admit, I asked Daniel to send me iFaith to review several months ago, but it’s been sitting on my shelf. I finally picked it up two days ago. This morning I finished it. I read it in two days not because I felt obligated but because iFaith is truly engaging, readable, and very timely. Dan’s wit had me laughing out loud and his conversational style kept me moving through the pages.

In iFaith: Connecting with God in the 21st Century, Daniel tackles serious faith topics that Christians have grappled with throughout history – topics such as prayer, God’s “silence,” doubt, and discouragement – but he deals with them from a unique and very contemporary viewpoint. Since our digital age influences even the way we relate to God, Daniel approaches key components of our faith within the context of our digital attitudes.

For example, our “instant” culture has taught us to expect immediate responses and results. Since we rarely have to wait for anything, we don’t think we should have to wait on God either. Dan connects our prayer life to email.

“I’d like to send a read receipt to God. Wouldn’t you? A little note that says, “Did You hear my prayer? And if so, would You click this box? Thank You, Your humble servant, Dan.”

Daniel uses this exaggerated example to emphasize how hard it is for most of us to wait on God – and even more so in the 21st century. Yet Dan reminds us of the digital age that God grows our faith in the waiting room.

“Waiting is considered loathsome to a generation accustomed to having quick answers, fast results, and instant gratification. But we must surrender our hearts to the sovereignty of God who slows us down, because waiting is not wasted time at all. Waiting is the essence of a faith that pleases Him.”

Here are a few other ways Daniel connects the digital culture with our faith:

  • Busyness: Our “full-throttle, no-rest” lifestyle leaves little time for God
  • Progress: The more our society progresses, the less we feel we need God
  • Technology: As useful for the Kingdom as technology is, unfortunately it has become an idol to some

iFaith is well worth your time. But be prepared. You will be encouraged, but you may also be challenged to adjust some attitudes and actions. Just the kind of book we need. Thanks Dan.

Daniel Darling is the Senior Pastor of Gages Lake Bible Church in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and is the author of Teen People of the Bible, Crash Course, and iFaith.

When You Can’t Find God

Have you ever wondered where God was while you suffered through trouble and difficulty? Maybe you questioned why He allowed these trials into your life.

God never promised Christians that our lives would be trouble-free. In fact, Scripture clearly shows that God chooses to work in the midst of our difficulties to transform our lives. But how do we get through them? How do we see God’s activity and sense His presence when the storms rage around us?

In her new book, When You Can’t Find God, award-winning author Linda Evans Shepherd, declares we can live as victors of our troubles instead of victims. Grounded in the truth of Scripture, Shepherd practically shows how we can find real joy and rest in the midst of our pain.

The advice and encouragement Shepherd offers in this book were wrought from hard-lived experience. Here’s a brief excerpt from the book that shares the author’s greatest challenge:

I also thought of my own pain. It had been twenty years since a violent car crash had hurled my baby, while still in her car seat, into the middle of the freeway. Though my child had finally returned to me from her year-long coma, I’d been heartbroken when she’d woken up with severe disabilities. Oh, I understood pain and difficulties – I’d wrestled with them then, and I still face circumstances today that bring me pain.

Shepherd shows readers how to see God in any circumstance, even when it’s hard. She offers strategies for surviving difficult times, giving your troubles to God, praying through the pain, and finding peace, hope, and joy once more. She also shows readers how to use their sorrows as a tool to draw nearer to God.

The book includes a Bible study and discussion guide to be used with a small group. Shepherd also provides a short video to enhance each chapter on the book’s website,  Ignite My Faith. Purchase the book now.

Thank you Linda for sharing your heart and experience with us!

Are you running?

Have you ever experienced an immediate connection with someone you just met? It may have been an instant friendship or a sense of kinship based on similar passions or life experiences. God has granted me that blessing several times. I want to introduce you to one of those blessings today.

I met Jennifer Devlin several years ago at a writer’s conference. She led a round table discussion I attended and we quickly discovered our hearts are on the same wavelength. Jennifer is a Bible teacher, speaker, and author. Her newest book, Choosing to Run, has just been released by Randall House Publishers. Here’s a brief overview:

Jennifer Devlin reaches out to those desperate for a second chance at life as well as those needing a fresh relationship with God. This book is an adventure through the story of Jonah and other biblical characters who discovered the unending love of God, grace, and mercy in difficult times. Devlin reminds the reader that God wants to give everyone a life without regrets, rebellion, or the captivity of sin. This wonderful read will result in the acceptance of God’s grace and restoration of the most broken areas of life. The gift given to the reader will be a freedom that many have never experienced before.

Jennifer’s heart for God and desire to see others overwhelmed by His grace show through her writing. I love that she guides the reader through Scripture to discover this amazing grace. And it’s an exciting journey too! Her passion for God’s Word is contagious!

Do you need God’s grace? Do you still have days of rebellion? Get Choosing to Run to learn more about Jonah’s God of second chances!

How do you balance life and ministry?

Today, we get to talk to my friend Janet Thompson about her newest release Face-to-Face with Priscilla and Aquila: Balancing Life and Ministry. This book is the 5th in the Face-to-Face Bible study series published by New Hope Publishers.

Janet, please tell us why you chose to write about balancing life and ministry. It’s certainly something many people struggle with.

I’m always troubled when a Christian’s schedule becomes overcrowded with obligations and activities. Ministry work and service are often the first things they choose to cut back on. A new job or promotion or life change can prompt feelings of no longer having sufficient time or energy to serve at church or in ministry. In an effort to balance life and ministry, the scales may be tipped to the secular side instead of tipped to the spiritual side. It’s a subtle shift that is usually made for practical reasons, but God is calling His people to trust that He will provide if only they will remain faithful to staying about His work.

Why did you pick Priscilla and Aquila as mentors for balancing life?

Priscilla and Aquila managed to keep ministry as their number one priority while running a tentmaking business, mentoring other Christians, moving numerous times, and opening their home for the apostle Paul to stay and the church to meet. This inspiring couple understood the importance of Christians participating in spreading the good news and serving together in ministry and life. Their story is not often told unless mentioned in conjunction with being good friends of Paul and mentoring the biblical scholar Apollos, but there is so much for couples and anyone serving in a ministry to learn from this gifted and dedicated husband and wife.

Would it be valuable for couples to do this study?

Absolutely! They could do the study as a couple or in a couple’s small group. Today when couples do serve in the church, they often don’t serve together, but the marriage relationship is richly blessed when a couple surrenders their life to be used by God in a way that allows them to share that experience together. My prayer is that Face-to-Face with Priscilla and Aquila: Balancing Life and Ministry will inspire more couples to serve together as a team in their home and in their church.

Is this study just for couples?

No, it has numerous applications. There are questions for doing the study on your own, or a mentor and mentee or two friends to study together, or there is a leader’s guide in every book for small or large group study. Each study consists of five sessions.

Any last words for our readers?

If you’re going to tip the scales of life, tip them towards God! One way to do that is to share the load with someone else. It’s always better doing things together.

If you enjoy this study, please try one of the other Face-to-Face studies:

How can we follow God?

My dear friend, Connie Cavanaugh, has a brand new book that will help us all follow God more closely! Following God One Yes at a Time, has just been released by Harvest House Publishers. In her book, Connie tells us how — one simple, immediate, possible yes at a time – to do what Jesus commanded when He said, “Follow Me.” This is “following God for dummies”; it is a simple way for ordinary Christians to follow Christ through the maze of our complicated lives.

Q: Connie, you begin by saying “God has a dream for every believer.” Could you explain that?

God does have a dream for every believer. In fact He has many overlapping, interlocking dreams for us: some big, some small; some lifelong, some seasonal; some manageable, some seemingly impossible. When His dream looks like a mountain we can’t climb, because we lack faith in ourselves and in Him, we think:

  • This dream is too big; I don’t have what it takes.
  • The process looks so complicated; I don’t even know where to start.
  • The finish line is so far away; I don’t think I can go the distance.
  • I’ve tried before and dropped out; I must be all out of chances.
  • Is this God speaking or my own wishful thinking?
  • People like me don’t get to do these things; I’m not worthy of this.

Q: Are these the barriers you refer to in the book’s subtitle Overcoming the Six Barriers that hold you back?

Yes, the biggest barriers to following God are internal, not external. It’s not situations, circumstances, tragedies, crises or even physical limitations but it’s things like fear, guilt, pride, shame, comparison, and doubt that hold us back from pursuing the dreams God has for us. Following God one yes at a time is about how God breaks down His impossible dream into manageable steps and once we begin to follow Him in faith, because He loves us, He sends us proofs that we’re on the right track.

Q: God sends us “proofs” when we follow Him? What do you mean by that?

Even though we talk about a God who is alive and personal, all Christians occasionally feel like He is remote and invisible. Once God gets us to say yes to His dream and begin following Him, He knows that we’re going to be battling doubts and fears so He sends us proofs that we heard Him correctly and we’re on the right track. These proofs are little assurances that we pick up in a number of ways – through our daily Bible reading or hear in a sermon or through music or circumstance or pretty much anything that God chooses to use. He’s not limited in the ways He communicates with us. These “proofs” are His way of encouraging us not to lose heart but to keep following.

Q: Where can people find this book?

You can buy Following God One Yes at a Time at most Christian booksellers and online bookstores. If your local bookstore does not carry it, they can order it for you.
