Meanwhile… Genesis 37:26-36

There’s no better way to start the week than by filling up with God’s Word. So each Monday morning join me here to take a brief, but reflective look into a passage of Scripture.

About a year ago, my oldest daughter and her husband began looking to purchase their first home. After weeks of traipsing around unsuitable houses they found it! It met their needs and fit their budget.

While Kelley and Jeremy took photos of the house they knew was perfect their realtor called the listing agent. After a short conversation she shared the discouraging news. The owner had received a contract just the night before. Extremely disappointment, they decided to wait a bit. They had looked at everything available in their price range.

Two weeks later their realtor called with good news. The deal on “their” house had not worked out. They put in an offer that day and by the next it was accepted. They moved in last May. This situation reminded our family that God has plans we don’t always see. He’s always working, even when we aren’t aware of His activity. Let’s see this truth in Scripture today:

26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain by killing our brother? We’d have to cover up the crime. 27 Instead of hurting him, let’s sell him to those Ishmaelite traders. After all, he is our brother—our own flesh and blood!” And his brothers agreed. 28 So when the Ishmaelites, who were Midianite traders, came by, Joseph’s brothers pulled him out of the cistern and sold him to them for twenty piecesof silver. And the traders took him to Egypt.

29 Some time later, Reuben returned to get Joseph out of the cistern. When he discovered that Joseph was missing, he tore his clothes in grief. 30 Then he went back to his brothers and lamented, “The boy is gone! What will I do now?”  31 Then the brothers killed a young goat and dipped Joseph’s robe in its blood. 32 They sent the beautiful robe to their father with this message: “Look at what we found. Doesn’t this robe belong to your son?”

33 Their father recognized it immediately. “Yes,” he said, “it is my son’s robe. A wild animal must have eaten him. Joseph has clearly been torn to pieces!” 34 Then Jacob tore his clothes and dressed himself in burlap. He mourned deeply for his son for a long time. 35 His family all tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “I will go to my grave mourning for my son,” he would say, and then he would weep.  36 Meanwhile, the Midianite traders arrived in Egypt, where they sold Joseph to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Potiphar was captain of the palace guard.

Joseph’s brothers, jealous of their father’s favoritism and affection, sold him into slavery. Jacob believed his beloved son was dead. However, “Meanwhile…” God was working in Egypt. His plan was drastically different than it appeared. Joseph would rise to power in Egypt and Jacob would see his son again.

What circumstances of your life appear to be hopeless right now?

Ask God to impact you with the truth that He is indeed working. Ask for Him to fill you with the knowledge that He has a plan and the power to carry it out!

Best Trade Ever

What’s the best trade you ever negotiated? Perhaps you got something great in exchange for something of much less value. Or maybe like me in my Kindergarten trading days, you ended up with a cheap plastic turtle while the boy in the back of the bus took home your Partridge Family lunch box. (My mother was not happy with me.)

If you have a saving relationship with Jesus, then you’ve received the best trade of all eternity. Read the following passage for the details:

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

2 Corinthians 5:17-21, NIV

Verse 21 highlights this spiritual exchange. Jesus took our sin and gave us His righteousness. Hallelujah! This “trade” purchased our salvation.

Look back through the Scripture passage. List the benefits we receive because of this trade.

How should we respond to this glorious exchange?

Monday Minute in the Word – First to serve or be served?

There’s no better way to start the week than by filling up with God’s Word. So each Monday morning join me here to take a brief, but reflective look into a passage of Scripture.

Our society is obsessed with fame and notoriety. The glut of reality television shows and the celebrity of non-celebrities like the Kardashians well demonstrate this sad truth. We want to be known. We want to be first. We want to win. We want to have.

As Christians, we must purposefully work to not be affected by this mentality. One way to do that is by constantly immersing ourselves in the truth of Scripture. Let’s take a look at what Jesus said about it:

20Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.

21 “What is it you want?” he asked.

She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”

22 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?”

   “We can,” they answered.

23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”

24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Matthew 20:20-28, NIV

The desire to “be somebody” is not new. Even the woman who gave birth to James and John was a stage mother who petitioned Jesus to gain special status for her sons. Jesus’ response resonates as loudly today as it did in the first century. Jesus also modeled the character He wants us to have. Humble service. Giving instead of taking. Stepping back when others would step forward.

Is there some area of your life where you are seeking to be served rather than serve?

What attitudes and behaviors does God want you to evaluate and change?

I’m really not ignoring you! I just didn’t hear you!

Do you ever feel like you speak and no one listens? Sometimes we feel that way with God. Sometimes our spouse. Sometimes our friends.

If you’ve recently tried to contact me through this website and I did not respond, it’s because I didn’t hear you! I just discovered this morning that the contact page on this site is not working and I don’t know how long it’s been down.

Fresh starts and second chances

I have a love/hate relationship with January 1st. I love the New Year because it represents a time of fresh starts, new commitments, and second chances. I hate the New Year because it usually reminds me I need to be more disciplined, give up something in which I’ve overindulged (chocolate and ice cream for instance), and generally get back on track in several areas.

I’m going to make a few of confessions as a way to confirm my “fresh starts.” Please feel free to hold me accountable. Are you ready? Here we go:

  • I have not been eating well the last few months. It started during our move from Midland to Houston in July. I’ve been pretty much eating what I want, when I want it. It’s not healthy and my jeans definitely know what I’ve been doing.
  • I slacked off in memorizing Scripture during the latter half of the year. I started 2011 off pretty well, but I allowed our move and a big deadline to push it to the back burner.
  • I sometimes allow email to distract me from the most important communication of the day. A couple of years ago God showed me that I should make my time with Him first priority. Email, Facebook, and household chores can often become black holes for my time. What I think is a “quick minute” turns into much longer.

Now, that I’ve opened up and made myself a little vulnerable I will also share with you my commitments to fresh starts.

  • I commit to healthy eating in 2012. I will not be legalistic; I will occasionally enjoy treats. But I will regularly feed my body with the good foods God gave us to eat – fruits, vegetables, and lean meats. Oh yeah, and not to excess!
  • I renew my commitment to Scripture memory. This month I will begin memorizing new passages from the book of Ephesians. I will also get back on track with regular review of previously memorized passages. (If you are interested in Scripture memory, check out the resources available on the free resources page.)
  • I also renew my commitment to make time with God my very first priority each day.

I am so thankful that God gives us chances to begin again. When we fall down, He picks us up and sets our feet back on the right path! And He also gives us each other for encouragement and accountability. That’s exactly why I shared all this with you – encouragement and accountability.

Have you made any commitments to fresh starts for 2012? Feel free to share!
