There is a Facebook group entitled “The Anointed Michael Followers.” In order to join you have to agree to this statement: “Michael Jackson is the Messiah.” I know this is extreme, but it’s a symptom of a wide spread problem.
It happened again Sunday morning. It’s happened to me several times before. Right in the middle of singing praise songs, worshipping the Lord of all creation, a thought pops into my mind. “Hands are raised. Voices lifted. This is a little bit like a rock concert.” But then the truth takes its place. “No, a rock concert is merely a twisted reflection of true worship.”
Humans were created to worship the creator. God formed us for His glory, to give Him honor and praise (Isaiah 43:7). We were wired for worship.
All humans worship. Unfortunately, many humans worship something other than their Creator. They have exchanged the truth of God for a lie. They refuse to bow their knee to the only One who deserves our worship, yet they bow to created things in a vain attempt to satisfy their innate need to worship.
“For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles (Romans 1:21-22).”
Michael Jackson worship is an example of this. But so is the worship of money, job, spouse, children, recreation, self… The list is truly endless. Anytime we put anything before God it has become an idol, something we worship. I’ve been guilty of this.
Let’s put our idols down and bow our knees to the only One who is worthy. “Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before Him with thanksgiving and extol Him with music and song (Psalm 95:1-2).”
My wife saw a child in the store the other day wearing a Michael Jackson tribute t-shirt and it really disturbed her. Even if the child molestation charges were never proven, there’s little doubt that something improper was going on there. So why, as a parent, would you garb your child in a shirt that pays homage to a child molester? People seem to get so wrapped up in hype & trend that they lose all common sense sometimes…
