I can count the number of times I’ve attended a Yoga class on two fingers. Yesterday was one of those two. No, I’m not trying to start something new. My daughter – who, by the way, is getting married in two days – teaches Yoga and wanted me to attend. Well, as you can imagine, I’m taking advantage of every opportunity to spend time with her in these last few moments, even if it means pushing beyond my physical limits.

My sore muscles and stiff joints made themselves known even before I got up this morning. I’m not as flexible as I was in my younger days. And yes, I know that tomorrow will be even worse. The second day after stupidity is always worse.

Well, these post-Yoga aches and pains will fade away fairly quickly. They are minor compared to other suffering that surrounds us all constantly. Sometimes we experience it, sometimes our neighbor does. From illness and death to violence and cruelty, our world is bombarded by the effects sin has wrought.

Even times of joy are tainted by it. On Saturday when my daughter begins her new life with Jeremy there will be a few bittersweet moments. For instance, when the grandparents are seated my father-in-law will enter by himself. Kelley’s paternal grandmother is already with Jesus.

Sin touches everything. In Romans chapter 8, Paul says that all creation is in bondage to decay. From the time of that first sin in the Garden of Eden all the way to today, all of creation “has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth.” We experience it in everything from physical pain and illness to grief in the loss of one we love. From droughts and floods to tornadoes and earthquakes.

Along with the created world, we groan as we experience the effects of sin. Romans 8:21 says that one day “creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.” When Jesus returns we will be liberated from our groaning and the world will be redeemed from the decay that sin brought. What a glorious hope we have. Lord Jesus come quickly.
