Note: Join me every Monday morning for a brief, but reflective look into God’s Word. There’s no better way to start your week.

Many years ago when I was a young mom, I found myself in a spiritual conversation with a bag boy in a grocery store parking lot. I don’t remember how we began talking but I do remember one particular question he asked. “Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus is God?”

By the time he finished his question I was already asking God for help. God answered me with a Scripture passage. I had memorized John 1:1-5 when I was a girl, but had not reviewed it since then.

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.  John 1:1-5, ESV

I don’t know how God used these verses to impact that young man, but Christians must not miss the powerful truths about Jesus packed into these verses. Without these truths, Jesus is just a baby in a manger. Sweet, but of no significance or value to us. Don’t miss this:

  • Jesus has existed for all eternity. Before He was born as a baby in a stable, He was.
  • Jesus was the Father’s agent in creation. The Father made everything through the Son.
  • Jesus is God. Jesus is not only the Son of God. He is God; the same in nature.

Here are a few other verses that teach these same truths:

  • Colossians 1:20-21; 2:9
  • Philippians 2:5-11
  • Hebrews 1:1-3

Christmas celebrates the glorious truth that God came to mankind. He brought His light and life to our dark world. How desperately we need Him!

Are any of these truths new to you? The divinity of Jesus? The eternality of Jesus? The fact that Jesus was the agent of creation?

How can contemplating the truths about who Jesus is enrich the meaning of Christmas?
